Troop 344 visited the Florida Keys for a week in July of 2013. The trip began with a full day of ocean kayaking and snorkeling as we explored the waters around Indian Key as well as several mangrove channels where a manatee was spotted. During the week we also snorkeled on Looe Key Reef, Sombrero Reef, and Molasses Reef. Several additional stops were made to snorkel in the local habitats, including a night snorkel to experience the bioluminescence of marine plankton. We also included tours at the Turtle Hospital, the Dolphin Research Center, Long Key State Park Nature Trail, Fort Zachary Taylor, the Mel Fisher Ship Wreck Museum and finished off the trip with some time kicking back in Key West. The Scout participants earned their Oceanography Merit Badge as part of this trip.
