Troop 344/9344 will be hiking in the beautiful Black Elk Wilderness in South Dakota in mid July 2025. Hiking in the Black Elk Wilderness of South Dakota offers an unforgettable adventure through some of the most rugged and scenic landscapes in the Black Hills. This federally designated wilderness area, named after the Lakota spiritual leader Black Elk, is home to towering granite peaks, dense pine forests, and pristine meadows teeming with wildlife. The trail system includes the popular Black Elk Peak, the highest point in South Dakota, where hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views from the historic stone fire tower at the summit. Along the way, adventurers may encounter deer, mountain goats, and a variety of bird species while traversing rocky switchbacks and peaceful wooded paths. With its remote beauty and challenging terrain, the Black Elk Wilderness provides an ideal opportunity for our scout to seek inspiration and a true backcountry experience. Check back in late August for photos of our experiences.
